Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
