Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
